It has been said the pen is mightier than the sword. That is false. A warrior instead, would say, pen and sword are equal. Much the same can be said about gear and skills. Gear by itself is worthless just as skill without the gear to support it is ineffective.
Thus, we say "Gear and Skill in accord and balance".
One is not more important than the other, nor is one less worthy than the other. Equipment must match the skill you have now, or wish to one day possess. A high end piece of kit will allow the expression of great skill, whereas a poor piece of kit will not.
At the end of the day, a high quality weapon may not help an unskilled fighter...but it won't HURT them either, whereas the reverse is not true. A poor piece of equipment will in fact prevent a skilled fighter from performing at his best, whereas the best kit possible will allow him to perform at his utmost operational level.
